end of the frame; contains error detection element to allow for error checking

WLAN amendment speed: wifi

Wireless LAN (WLAN)

initializes & terminates communications while allowing identification & recognition of users

One wire induces a voltage across another wire through electromagnetic induction

Breaks the connection between the sender and receiver

Facilitates open development and internet use around the world

Consists of a central conductive core, layer of insulation, mesh of conductive woven braid, and protective jacket

WLAN amendment speed: ac-wirless gigabit wigig

Wireless transmission that utilizes modulated radio bands including HF, VHF, and UHF

shows who your DNS server is & if it's working correctly; will resolve an IP address from a domain name

All devices share the same abilities to use resources available on the network

Links names to IP address & vice versa

method for finding a host's MAC address when only its IP address is available

provides multiple service types such as data, voice, video, imaging, & fax without need to use different systems

Responsible for switching data traffic between end points

Connects networks and separates broadcast domains

internal command used to display ip settings for all interfaces & possible connections to your host

Provides access to print devices

focuses on addressing, routing between networks, & fragmenting

End device that can connect to a network; offers user services and applications that can help share and obtain resources

WLAN amendment speed: n-wireless wifi

Utilized to connect end devices while moving & managing the data within a network

Prevents surprise technological attacks against the US; Established by Congress in 1954

Devices that users are most familiar with (computer, smart phone, laptop)

Places control of network resources on a dedicated server

sets standards for the LAN topologies, mediums, and network access methods

ethernet amendments: ethernet =

Allows users to use or rent data storage, data backup, or software as a service (SaS)

standard for use with wireless media; carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA)

WLAN amendment speed: g-wireless

Anything that can severely affect quality of signal encoding

Manages network resources & allows sharing of those resources across network

7 layer reference model that describes how info moves from one computer to another on a network

protocols at this layer are responsible for addressing, routing packets between networks & fragmenting

process of dividing data into smaller pieces in a sequence

Creates reference standards for routing protocols; developed of the open systems interconnect (OSI) reference model

Disturbance from powered devices or radio transmissions in proximity to your medium

packaging one message format inside another message format in a sequence

Wireless transmission that uses high frequencies ranging between 11 GHz and 14 GHz

focuses on mediums themselves & the hardware used to move bits across these medium from one point to another

focuses on long term research regarding the Internet and TCP/IP

tool used to test connectivity to a particular host across an IP network

contains info about the type of media used & the encoding the medium's signal

Support data transfers up to but no larger than 1 Gbps

protocols handle all the hardware details of interfacing with the media & connecting devices to the network

contains all the encapsulated data from the upper layers

Distortion and/or weakening of a signal as it traverses the media

protocols at this layer are responsible for data flow control, segmentation, & error recovery

Interconnects a network node with the actual medium

old standard established for use with wire media; carrier sense multiple access with collision detection (CSMA/CD)

Connect, filter, and forward data traffic from one network segment to another

Can be added to a device and allows connection to a medium on a network; converts data back & forth to meet the signal

helps determine that path for a host while also providing hop info to the host

breaks down mediums into optical carrier (OC) levels; takes advantage of glass media

Actual physical communication channel

focuses on network security, file transfers, & formatting of the data at each end of communication

Pairs of insulated wires twisted together

Basic central connecting point

Media that carries electromagnetic signals using radio or microwave frequencies

contains MAC address of both the sending and receiving host
