Read something over again to fill in the gaps in your understanding

Use clues around a "tricky" word or confusing sentence to figure out what it means

Check that you are actively reading and controlling your own thinking and comprehension

Identify words that are used often that must be important to my understanding of a text

Sum up what you have read, often by identifying characters, setting, problem and the solution

Information from the text that the author wants you to know, but does not directly tell you

Talk about what you know to try to piece together the gaps in your understanding of the text

Break down what you have read into sections or parts to organize your understanding

Relate what you are reading to something you already know about the topic

Use clues from your reading and your personal experience to figure out what might happen next

Make a picture or movie of what you are reading in your mind

Break down a word into its parts to understand its root and meaning
