Honors Bio - Evolution

process where two species evolve in response to each other is

Evolution can occur more quickly with population shrinkers such as founder effect and bottleneck effect

which is not a factor in sexual selection

which of the following terms is not related

variation that enhances an organism's ability to survive

gene or allele frequencies change because of chance with

Species living in the same environment that become more similar

which is not a requirement for natural selection

Study of the developmental stages of organisms to determine how closely they are related

A carpenter loses a finger - his future offspring will then have 9 fingers according to

An isolated population that has an unusually high frequency of a rare trait

structures that no longer perform a function in an organism are

the ability of an organism to survive and reproduce in its environment

two species interbreed and produce vigorous fertile offspring but the next generation is feeble or sterile

which term is not related to the others

separation of populations by barriers such as rivers, mountains or bodies of water

two species mate and produce sterile offspring

most common source of variation

Darwin's theory of evolution is based on

what does sex generate

Porpoises and sharks look similar due to facing the same environmental challenges. This is an example of

speciation due to geographic isolation

what can occur when both extremes of a physical trait exhibit high fitness

changes is the gene pool of a population from one generation to the next

The different flashing pattern of fireflies demonstrates

evolution occurs more slowly

the flipper of a whale and the arm of a human

selection that favors those individuals whose characteristic is closest to the mean or average

type of speciation that occurs while organisms live in the same environment

two species mate but incompatible genes prevent the embryo from developing

movement of individuals between two nearby populations

movement of individuals between populations can cause

prezygotic barrier when organisms can't cross-fertilize because of incompatible proteins on their surfaces

in nature females often choose males with elaborate decorations because

reproductive barrier when the mating seasons for two animals are different

which combination would provide the greatest potential for evolutionary change

According to fossil evidence

Can link modern whales to their four-legged evolutionary ancestors

a continuous adapation of predators and their prey is an example of

Change in the relative frequencies of alleles in a population over several generations

a single species that has evolved into several different species

in order to support his theory of evolution Darwin did not use

emergence of a new species in short time followed by a long period of little change

Breeding purebred dogs for specific traits is an example of

which of the following is not a source of variation within a species or population

Random mating is a factor in sexual selection

population shrinker caused by catostrophy limiting diversity in a population

members of the same population
