Grade 9 Citizenship Terms and Concepts

This branch of government that makes decisions about how to best run the country and implements the laws.

People elected to represent people that live in their electoral district and represent their constituents.

Branch that makes laws, raises taxes, and authorizes government spending. Includes Monarch, senate, and House of Commons

A general increase in prices and fall in the purchasing value of money.

Power that comes from the capacity to reward people with material goods or emotional praise.

Using digital tools in a sensible and reasonable way; being accountable for your decisions and actions online

A charitable organisation that is meant to help children around the world.

The ability to influence or change the behaviour of others to help get things done.

This power is based on the capacity to threaten, harm, or punish.

"Lower house" members who are elected to discuss and vote on legislation.

A command economy where government controls all businesses and property and are collectively owned and shared equally.

A special benefit or advantage that is available only to certain people or groups.

A form of democracy where qualified citizens vote for the people they want to represent them in the House of Commons.

A privilege that is the result of effort and achievement.

Level of government that looks after a specific region and is responsible for things like education and healthcare.

A multi-level system of government where each level has its own leadership that is given powers and responsibilities.

The "upper house" and 1/2 of the legislative branch. Members appointed by the governor general on advice of PM.

People who generally do not have the same or equal access to opportunities as others.

A form of protest that uses violence to gain attention and can sometimes be used to fight injustice.

Refers to how others around your own age can influence your thinking- on purpose or not.

Describes an individual or community's well-being in areas like emotional, health, self development, and human rights.

A wage high enough to maintain a normal standard of living so a person can afford to pay for needs and wants.

A test to assess the reliability and credibility of a source during research to help evaluate its usefulness.

An advantage based solely on person's social class, gender, physical abilities, location, or other advantages.

Having specialized knowledge and skills and gaining power by being able to do things others can't.

People that are highly trusted, respected, and admired have this kind of power to influence others.

Means of communication that reaches large audiences with functions that include entertainment, reporting, and influence.

A person who lives in a city, town, or country, and who is allowed to have the rights and freedoms of that place.
