What efforts have helped mountain gorilla populations in Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Uganda increase?

engaging local communities in monitoring and anti-poaching efforts, habitat protection

What might happen if the Amazon reaches a tipping point?

It could turn from a rainforest into a dry, degraded savanna.

What are ecosystem services?

All the support that ecosystems provide for both people and the planet

What is a “tipping point” in nature?

when changes add up over time, pushing a system beyond a critical limit

If an ecosystem reaches its tipping point, what happens to its wildlife?

Their risk of extinction increases., They are forced to adapt to the changes.

What is the cryosphere?

all the frozen parts of the Earth

Which are examples of tools or methods that scientists use to monitor animal populations?

Monitoring their movements and evidence (scat, tracks, etc.), Camera traps, GPS tracking

Why is the Living Planet Index important?

It helps us understand the health of ecosystems.

What kinds of animals are studied for the World Wildlife Fund’s Living Plant Report?

Animals that scientists can study over time

Why is the Amazon rainforest important for the Earth’s climate?

It's a huge source of oxygen., It absorbs a lot of carbon from the atmosphere.

How do dams affect freshwater river species like the Chinook salmon?

Dams block migration routes, making it harder for them to spawn.
