PLTW Cybersecurity Review - Exploits & Hacks

Lets computers copy files to and from networked devices. If users can "FTP" to your computer, they can deliver malware.

Software running with elevated privileges to control a computer or to gain access to restricted accounts and data.

Software that locks your computer or makes it inoperable, requiring you to pay someone to remove it.

Software that can stop malware from entering a network, computer, or device.

A human-based attack in which the malicious user intercepts communication between the victim's computer and the internet

This in-between hacker uses illegal/unethical means to discover vulnerabilities, but share findings and report problems.

In terms of computer science, to increase a system's security and reduce its vulnerabilities.

A file that contains an official record of activities that occur on a computer

The unethical criminal hacker who breaks laws, steals data, holds information for ransom and commits other criminal acts

When an error message gives away some system details which unintentionally provides intelligence to potential hackers.

A (distributed) denial of service attack that targets web servers intending to stop normal operations and halt services.

The ethical cybersecurity expert who has permission to perform security tests and who fully discloses their activities.

Small units of data, transmitted on a network. Collected together, they compose some larger data, such as a document.

Software and hardware that track all keyboard clicks, including back spaces, to discover sensitive information/logins.

In Cybersecurity, what is "data cleansing"?

Software that replicates and infects computers, turning the computer into a "zombie" to use its processing, or as cover.

A network device that controls and filters data between networks wired or wireless. It is a specific type of "gateway".

A computer shared by multiple users across a network, which can be used to host a website.

Using knowledge of a web server's directory structure to navigate to locations that are unlinked and unreferenced:

Performing a computer attack to evaluate the security of a system.
