Dolphins have one baby at a time and put a lot of energy and investment into that one offspring.

Accepted Answer

K-selected life history

Question 15

Which is an example of a fixed action pattern?

Accepted Answer

A baby seagull screams for food in response to a red spot on mom's beak.

Question 16

A more diverse ecosystem is likely to be

Accepted Answer

high in species richness and evenness., resilient in the face of environmental changes.

Question 17

Eutrophication results in

Accepted Answer

"dead zones" from lack of oxygen, dense growth of aquatic producers

Question 18

A population with a demographic pyramid with a wide base (i.e., more individuals in younger cohorts) is expected to

Accepted Answer

increase in size at a faster rate.

Question 19

Which organism enjoys the highest probability of surviving a bit longer?

Accepted Answer

a mature tree

Question 20

"Boom and bust" population cycles in lynx and snowshoe hares are caused by

bottom up resource limitation, top down predation pressure

Question 21

Resource partitioning is most likely to occur between

Accepted Answer

sympatric populations of species with similar niches.

Question 22

The exponential model describes population growth in a(n) _____, _____ environment.

salinity of the water

Question 28

The number of individuals per unit area (or volume)

Accepted Answer

density

Question 29

Leeches, ticks, and fleas are examples of

Accepted Answer

symbiosis, parasitism

Question 30

You spot a single adult male surrounded by four females. This is consistent with which mating system?
