Rhetoric and Fallacies Review

Relying on someone's authority or celebrity to determine what is right or good.

Persuasion that plays on an audience's emotions. Can be positive emotions or negative emotions

Building association between a person or group with things that "glitter", even if there's no evidence/action

Argues that if a or b happen, a chain of events will automatically lead to x, y, and z

Persuasion that relies the speaker's credibility, hype, or reputation

Saying that there are only two options when in reality, there are other alternatives

Presenting ONLY two solutions to a problem, when in reality, compromise is possible but they want you to pick sides

Distracting or changing the subject from an argument instead of addressing it

Persuasion that relies on facts, statistics, measurements or "common sense"

A fallacy that is similar to stereotyping. Making assumptions about a person based on their group identity

The art of persuasive writing or speaking

A fallacy where a person assumes that something is good or right based on the opinions/beliefs of those around them

Using language that "sugarcoats" to sound more positive. There is generally a translation that they are trying to cover

An argument that states the same thing twice, with the claim and reasoning used interchangeably to create a circle

A claim with its supporting details

An argument that relies on faulty logic (they cappin')

A fallacy that relies on personal character insults instead of defeating a person's argument

Using evidence or reasoning that has only a distant connection or no connection to the evidence

Stating that because two things happened around the same time, one must have caused the other
