One reason endemic species are at high risk of extinction is:

They exist in isolated populations with low genetic diversity

Why are invasive species particularly damaging to Galápagos ecosystems?

Native species evolved without the pressure of competition or predation

Which of the following is an example of a conservation strategy to prevent introduction of invasive species?

Quarantine procedures for imports and tourists

Why are flightless cormorants an example of island evolution?

They evolved reduced wings due to lack of predators and need for flying

Marine iguanas bask in the sun before feeding because:

They are ectothermic and need to raise body temperature

Which of the following is a method of in situ conservation used in the Galápagos?

Creation of a protected National Park and Marine Reserve

Why are many species on the Galápagos Islands endemic?

The islands' isolation has prevented gene flow from other populations

1
One reason endemic species are at high risk of extinction is:
They reproduce asexually
They evolve rapidly and die out naturally
They exist in isolated populations with low genetic diversity
They are always genetically uniform
2
Why are invasive species particularly damaging to Galápagos ecosystems?
Native species evolved without the pressure of competition or predation
They reproduce more slowly than native species
Invasive species only affect plant life
The islands are too large to manage invasive species
3
Which of the following is an example of a conservation strategy to prevent introduction of invasive species?
Captive breeding of sea lions
Quarantine procedures for imports and tourists
Fishing quotas
Expansion of urban zones for locals
4
Why are flightless cormorants an example of island evolution?
They developed flight to migrate between islands
They evolved reduced wings due to lack of predators and need for flying
They migrated from Antarctica and adapted their wings for cold
Their wings grew longer due to increased wind
5
Which plant plays a key role in supporting herbivores like tortoises and iguanas in the arid zones?
Palo Santo tree
Opuntia cactus
Mangrove
Scalesia forest
6
The islands are protected by the National Park AND The Marine Reserve
False
True
7
Marine iguanas bask in the sun before feeding because:
They are warm-blooded and need to cool down
They need to perform mating rituals before feeding
They are ectothermic and need to raise body temperature
Their skin absorbs water during basking
8
Which of the following is a method of in situ conservation used in the Galápagos?
Breeding programs in zoos on mainland Ecuador
Cryopreservation of seeds from native plants
Transporting species to botanical gardens for study
Creation of a protected National Park and Marine Reserve
9
What ecological term best describes species like the lava cactus that colonize bare volcanic rock?
Climax species
Keystone species
Indicator species
Pioneer species
10
Why are many species on the Galápagos Islands endemic?
The climate prevents migration
The islands have always been connected to the mainland
The islands' isolation has prevented gene flow from other populations
High mutation rates
