a comparison of two unlike things but does not use contain like or as 

narrator outside the story; uses "he," "she,"  or "they" 

personality is revealed by words, actions, thoughts, appearance and reaction of others

author directly tells the audience the personality of the character

This is a character that learns a lesson and/or changes during the story (i.e. Scrooge)

when the conflict has been resolved

An expression that is not taken literally ( it is raining cats and dogs )
