Place Value, Multiplication, and Expressions Vocabulary

A number that tells how many times a base is used as a factor. Example: 10³ = 10 x 10 x 10, 3 is the exponent.

A number used as a repeated factor. Example: 8³ = 8 x 8 x 8. The base is 8.

The value of each digit in a number based on the location of the digit.

To find a number that is close to an exact amount. Example: 10 x 11 ~ 100

The answer to a multiplication problem. Example: 8 x 9 = 72. The product is 72.

To find the value of a numerical or algebraic expression. Example: 3 x 4 (numerical expression)

A number that is multiplied by another number to find a product. Example: 2 x 3 = 6. The factors are 2 and 3.

A special set of rules which gives the order in which calculations are done in an expression.

When you combine equal groups, you can multiply to find out how many in all; the opposite of division. Ex: 5 x 6 = 30.

The number, not including the remainder, that results from dividing. Example: 8 ÷ 4 = 2. The quotient is 2.

Opposite operations that undo each other such as addition and subtraction or multiplication and division.

A mathematical phrase that uses only numbers and operation signs.  Example: (4 + 6) ÷ 5

Each group of three digits separated by commas in a multi-digit number. Example: 1,392,000 has three periods.
