Ch. 7 Memory test dual credit psych

Explicit memory of facts and general knowledge

Retrieving memories out of storage and into conscious awareness:

Anchor points for pathways you can follow to access certain memories:

we can recall more than we can recognize

An increase in a cell's firing potential, neural basis for learning and memory

How many things can we retain in our short-term memory?

Those who learn quickly, also forget quickly

Long term memory storage->_____________->retrieval failure leads to ________

Memories of facts and experiences we can consciously know and declare

Experience and learning decrease the number of synapses

What is NOT included in implicit memories?

After a horrific experience, it is harder to remember what happened.

Age enables us to code faster

Occurs when an older memory makes it more difficult tor remember new info

If you think you can look something up later online, you remember it less well.

Which is the third Atkinson-Shiffrin information processing model stage?

After a long term potential has occurred, an electrical current may erase memories

What we learn in one mood may be more easily recalled when in that mood again

Plays an important role in forming and storing memories created by classical

Memories recovered under hypnosis or drugs are especially reliable

Tendency to recall events that fit our mood

Sending neurons _____ their neurotransmitters more easily

What did later psychologists change the name of short-term memory to?

The process of retaining encoded memory over time:

Working memory->_________> encoding failure leads to ____________

Helps form memories of motor skills

Receiving neurons may ____ additional receptor sites

Testing does more than assess learning, it improves it.

Only real memories not false ones can be emotionally upsetting

Which is the second Atkinson-Shiffrin information processing model stage?

What are strategies to improve memory?

We retain information better when our encoding is spread over time:

Stress hormones provoke the ____ to boost acitivity in the brains memory areas

We have limited storage space for memories

Memories that form without our conscious effort and through automatic processing:

we can avoid some encoding errors by translating into _____________terms:

Temporary storage for memories in the limbic system

When we are exposed to misleading information, we tend to misremember:

We store memories in specific spots in the brain

Occurs when new learning disrupts your memory of older information

Which is the first Atkinson-Shiffrin information processing model stage?

encoding->_________ _________ _________

The process of getting information into the memory system

Process where one thing triggers memories of another without you being aware of it

Explicit memory of personally experienced events:

Memory aids that use vivid imagery and organizational devices:

Amnesiacs can't form explicit memories but their ___ processing ability is intact

Specific words are stored here

Effective way to distribute practice is repeated self-testing:

You retain the memory of an event but not its context

vivid snapshot memory of a major often shocking social event

Sleep is essential to memory consolidation

Identifying items previously learned

What are the two tracks in parallel processing?

The neural storage of a long term memory

Visual images are stored here

What are strategies to improve memory?

Learning something more quickly when you learn it a second time

putting yourself back in a place where you experienced something to remember

Arousal can interfere with memory formation

The first state in forming explicit memories

The process of getting information out of memory storage:

When we replay a memory, we often replace the original with a modified version

Why is some forgetting advantageious?

The forgetting curve is slow at first and increases with time

Memories of things that happened before age 3 are unreliable

The best time to learn new things is the hour before you fall asleep

As more serotonin is released into the synapse it becomes more efficient

Organize items into familiar manageable units:

Memories that surface naturally are more likely to be true

The persistence of learning over time:

What happens in the second stage?

What can help us retrieve memories?

we remember the first and last parts of a list best

External events->________->attention
