Chapter 18 Bio

In biology, a trait that arose in an ancestor and is passed along to its descendants is

several different classes make up a

Linnaean classification involves _____ categories of organisms

study of how living things and extinct organisms are related to one another

Papio annubis and Papio cynocephalus are not the same

A grouping based on their common descent is called

2 domains composed of only unicellular organisms bacteria and

similar DNA sequences in genes can be evidence of

The second part of the scientific name is the

Linnaeus's system of classification, how many levels are there

to determine evolutionary relationships among very dissimilar organisms, scientists analyze

modern biologist build classification diagrams called cladograms that reflect lines of

traditional classification tended to take into account primarily

domain that contains unicellular organisms that live in extreme environments

Organisms in the kingdoms eubacteria and archaebacteria were previously grouped in a kingdom

Any level organization, groups that have a biological meaning are referred to as

Which name in the binomial nomenclature is capitalized

all organisms in the kingdom plant, animal, fungi, protists are

eubacteria, protist, plants, animals, fungi, archaea are the 6

2 highest level taxa in the Linnaean system

One goal of scientists is to assign every organism a universally accepted name

The science of naming and grouping organisms

binomial compares with early versions of scientific names: they tend to be

In evolutionary classification, a monophyletic group includes one ancestor and all of its

paired statements which can be used to identify an organism

Linnaeus: all life was divided into

second part of the scientific name is a description of a trait or

to be useful A scientific name has to refer to

species: regional differences

____ composed of a number of similar species

Common names can refer to

Heterotrophs with cell walls of chitin
