Theory of Plate Tectonics Quiz

Question 1

The plates are made up of the crust & the upper mantle - combined they are called

Accepted Answer

the lithosphere.

Question 2

Moving plates can interact in several different ways - causing ____ to form.

Accepted Answer

plate boundaries

Question 3

A subduction zone can form when an ocean plate is pulled under a(n) ____ plate.

Accepted Answer

continental, ocean

Question 4

Continental crust is less dense than ocean crust.

Accepted Answer

TRUE

Question 5

Scientists monitor plate movement by using ___ - although earthquake prediction is unreliable.

Accepted Answer

GPS

Question 6

Usually no subduction occurs when two continental plates collide because

Accepted Answer

they crumple up and form mountain ranges., they are less dense than the asthenosphere.

Question 7

Ocean-continental subduction produces ____ & volcanoes.

Accepted Answer

earthquakes

Question 8

According to the theory of plate tectonics, Earth's crust and part of the upper mantle are

Accepted Answer

broken into sections.

Question 9

____ boundaries occur when two plates slide past one another.

Accepted Answer

Transform

Question 10

Convection currents in Earth's mantle are thought to be the driving force behind

Accepted Answer

plate tectonics., seafloor spreading.

Question 11

A new theory that combined the ideas of seafloor spreading & continental drift became known as

Accepted Answer

plate tectonics.

Question 12

The lithosphere is about 100 km thick and is generally

Accepted Answer

less dense than the material underneath it.

Question 13

A convergent boundary is when two plates are

Accepted Answer

colliding.

Question 14

An example of a convergent plate boundary is the San Andreas fault.

Accepted Answer

FALSE

Question 15

An example of a divergent plate boundary is the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

Accepted Answer

TRUE

Question 16

These sections are called plates - and move

Accepted Answer

on a plastic-like layer of the upper mantle.

Question 17

When one plate suddenly slips past another plate, ____ occur.

Accepted Answer

earthquakes

Question 18

The plastic-like layer just below the lithosphere is called the

Accepted Answer

asthenosphere.

Question 19

A divergent boundary is when two plates are

Accepted Answer

moving apart.

Question 20

The evidence for seafloor spreading showed that not only the continents were moving, but

Accepted Answer

the seafloor was also moving as well.
