To Kill a Mockingbird Literary Devices

Harper Lee describes Maycomb as "an old town, but a tired old town." 

"Mr. Cunningham's basically a good man...he just has blind spots along with the rest of us."

"'I wish Bob Ewell wouldn't chew tobacco,' was all Atticus said about it."

"When enough years had gone by to enable us to look back on them..."

"Punk, punk, her needle broke the taut circle. She pulled the cloth tighter; punk, punk, punk."

"...we sometimes discussed the events leading to his [Jem's] accident."

"It was times like these when I thought my father...was the bravest man who ever lived."

The entire court case is an example of this: 

"Mockingbirds don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us."

The manner of expression is youthful and innocent; as the novel progresses, it is dark.

Scout tells Atticus that hurting Boo Radley would be "sort of like shootin' a mockingbird."

"Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it."

"...it is a sin to kill a mockingbird."

"The world's endin', Atticus!"

"Jem," I said, "Are those the Ewells sittin' down yonder?"

Dill returns. The children begin to act out the Boo Radley story, but are stopped by Atticus.

"I felt very old, but when I looked at the tip of my nose I could see fine misty beads..."

"Angel-bright, life-in-death; get off the road, don't suck my breath."

"...bony mules hitched to Hoover carts flicked flies in the sweltering shade of the...square.."
