P109 Exam 1 Review

Recruit health professionals to test ppl year round to monitor early warnings of outbreak, AKA Canary in the Coal Mine

Estimates the chances of dying from a disease once it is diagnosed

Gun violence is not a public health crisis.

The word quarantine finds its origins in Italy and was used as a way to prevent the spread of the Black Death.

The component of the PERIE process that addresses the question: “How do we implement our recommendation?”

Population health is a part of public health.

The component of the PERIE process that addresses the question: “How well does the intervention work?”

Measure of injury, illness, or amount of disease within a population

Proportion of individuals who have the disease at a point in time or "how much" disease currrently exists in population

Prevents the disease or event from occurring.

The component of PERIE that addresses the question: “What interventions prevent or reduce parts of the event?"

Occurs when hazards that are out of our control are perceived as more threatening

It’s easy to measure prevention in public health.

Which of the following are used to describe the Etiology in the PERIE Process? Select all that apply

Descriptive epidemiology: Select all that apply.

Reduces the progression of disease through early detection or by reducing risk factors.

Occurs with hazards that easily produce very visual and feared consequences

Has no director which means there is no agency, governmental body, or CEO to direct efforts or set standards

Measure of the deaths related to a specific injury or disease within a population

Which two discoveries illustrate the importance of careful data collection and documentation before & after intervention

Which of the following are challenges in public health today? Select all that apply

Public health has improved health by the overall decrease in average life expectancy over the last 100 years

Is the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states and events within a population

What did the Tiahrt Amendment do?

Separates sick people with contagious diseases from people who are not sick

Occurs when health agencies contact providers seeking reports or info to ensure a more complete reporting of conditions

There has been a significant decrease in deaths related to infectious disease since the 1900s.

Descriptive Epidemiology answers:

It is easy to make data meaningful in public health

Provides an opportunity for healthcare systems, agencies, and organizations to work together to improve health outcomes.

Prevent risk factors from ever being present

Protects and improves the health of communities through policy recommendations, health education, and research

It is possible to go from passive surveillance to active surveillance with the same disease report.

Most routine surveillance systems are:

Limits the disability caused by disease to restore optimal health

Used to assess the short and long-term results of an intervention

A calculation that allows public health to compare events between two populations of different sizes

The PERIE Process is an evidence based approach for defining, analyzing, and addressing a range of public health issues.

Who proved microorganisms were the cause of infectious diseases by studying anthrax in farm animals?

Which is false about public health?

Which of the following is true about biostatistics? Select all that apply.

Confounding occurs when a factor is associated with both the exposure and outcome but does not show causation.

Focuses on those with the highest probability of developing disease and aims to decrease their risk

What is an intervention?

Analytic Epidemiology answers:

Sometimes disease just happens, there are no specific patterns or trends to each event.

Who discovered “animalcules?”

Implies data are compiled and presented in a way that is designed for a specific use

Which of the following does NOT cause artifacts in our data?

Focuses on one or more symptoms rather than a physician diagnosed or laboratory confirmed disease

What are the components of the epidemiology triangle?

Which of the following is the single most important factor influencing the causes of death and disability?

Involves using statistical processes and methods to collect, analyze, and interpret public health data.

Who is known as the Father of Modern Epidemiology?

Used to monitor implementation of an intervention.

Suggested diseases were transmitted by “invisible seeds” which were self-replicating and specific to individual diseases

There has been a transition from chronic diseases to infectious diseases being the main cause of death

Separates and restricts the movement of people who were exposed to contagious disease to see if they become sick.

What do healthcare entities do if they want to assess the health of the population they serve but they need a baseline?

Measure of central tendency that takes the average of all the values

Largely funded by the government, which may hinder efforts or fail to protect the health of the public

Occurs when data is automatically routed to the public health entity without any action from the receiving agency

Who discovered the first safe and effective vaccine for polio?

What reading level should public facing health information be at?

Refers to an individual's ability to obtain, process & understand basic health info to make appropriate health decisions

Where do we see the first use of spatial relationships in a disease investigation?

Which of the following does NOT apply to the Dickey Amendment?

Measures the health outcomes that are a result of the improvement plans

Viral Statistics include: (Select all that apply)

A simple count of the item being measured

Analytic Epidemiology: Select All that Apply

Measure of central tendency that is the value that occurs most often in a distribution

Measure of central tendency that is the central value of the distribution if you order the numbers low to high

Population health stresses the collaboration between traditional public health, healthcare delivery & health professions

Hazards that we lack experience with may elicit more fear

Epidemiology uses observational science to capitalize on naturally occurring situations to study a disease.

Epidemiology DOES NOT help identify:

Ensure healthcare providers, public health agencies, and community partners are held accountable for their efforts

Describes the rate of new disease within a group over a period of time

Who suggested disease might be associated with the physical environment and behaviors?

The component of the PERIE Process that addresses the question: “What is the health problem?”

John Snow was the first to distinguish epidemic from endemic diseases.

Out of the 10 deadliest mass shootings in US history, how many of them have taken place in the last 10 years?

Measures used to summarize the health of a population. Select all that apply.

The component of the PERIE process that addresses the question: “What causes the disease or event to occur?”

Facts or a representation of facts
