Sand and coral limestone

all other responses are correct!

More development = anchialine pools (wai 'opae) CANNOT co-exist in modern times?

No, they can, but cracks connecting lava rock to the ocean must remain

all the other options are correct as many organisms start life as plankton

'Ohi'a and Naupaka are native plants that

hold soil and water well to prevent erosion & storm water in runoff

What items in plastic makes people/animals sick?

all the other choices are known to cause health issues in humans/animals

What are the best conditions for observing/surveying limu/algae/seaweed?

during the spring tides, when tides are at their lowest twice a day

all of the other responses are correct!

make waves, break waves, and are broken down by waves into sand

What's NOT wrong with plastic? Or in other words... What's actually GOOD about plastics?

it's cheap, light-weight and very durable

Feral animals and ungulates degrade the water quality by

All the responses above are correct

We study the water quality of wai 'opae anchialine pools because they are close to our aquifers.

True! They get freshwater from rivers/streams too like aquifers do!

When restoring an anchialine pool (wai 'opae) to its original habitat what might volunteers/conservationists do?

check oxygen, phoshorus, nitrogen, and salinity levels

Answers

1
What industry funded the American economy post-WW2 after the demand for weapons markedly decreased?
compost facilities
renewable energy
bioplastics
plastics
2
Concrete structures prevent volcanic sediment/'ohi'a/naupaka from filtering water for an aquifer
because it's made of oil
because it's nonporous
by filling aquifers with clean, filtered water
as it adds filtered water to rivers and streams
3
Sand and coral limestone
make breaking waves & protect coastlines from waves too
all other responses are correct!
provide habitat (i.e. plankton, turtles, birds, crabs, fish, etc.)
purifies water like volcanic sediment does
4
More development = anchialine pools (wai 'opae) CANNOT co-exist in modern times?
Yes, wai 'opae must be removed to create habitats for humanity
No, they can, but cracks connecting lava rock to the ocean must remain
5
Pick the correct food chain in an anchialine pool (wai 'opae) ecosystem. *
cyanobacteria algae --> 'opae 'ula shrimp --> stilt ae'o bird
stilt ae'o bird --> 'opae 'ula shrimp --> cyanobacteria algae
'opae 'ula shrimp --> cyanobacteria algae --> stilt ae'o bird
none of these options are correct
6
Coral start out their lives as
meroplankton
diatoms
phytoplankton
amphipods
7
The type of indicator species that is a fish is
albatross that lay their eggs in the sand
loko i'a that can feed millions of people
o'opu that swim up waterfalls & grow up in tide pools
naupaka that is salt-tolerant
8
What is the name for pre-production plastic that is the same size, shape, and color of fish eggs?
caviar
nurdles
hamburglers
nerds
9
Zooxanthallae are
animal plankton
invasive algae
amphipods
phytoplankton algae that live in corals
10
What types of plankton do photosynthesis in the intertidal? *
meroplankton
coral
zooplankton
phytoplankton
11
The keystone species, that if removed, would disrupt the entire food web in an anchialine pool (wai 'opae) is the
ae'o as the birds provide eggs for invasive predators to eat
'opae 'ula shrimp that eat algae & are eaten by ae'o birds
tilapia as they don't grow well anywhere else except in anchialine pools
cyanobacteria as it's not so sunny and it hardly grows otherwise
12
Meroplankton include:
coral that start as plankton then grow big enough to see!
sea urchins that start as plankton then grow big enough to see!
snails that start as plankton then grow big enough to see!
all the other options are correct as many organisms start life as plankton
13
'Ohi'a and Naupaka are native plants that
hold soil and water well to prevent erosion & storm water in runoff
are native fish
are types of bioplastics
are native birds
14
What items in plastic makes people/animals sick?
dioxin- it's a known carcinogen
phthalates & BPA inhibit animal cell growth and function
all the other choices are known to cause health issues in humans/animals
radioactive toxins adhere to plastics soaked up in the ocean too :(
15
What are the best conditions for observing/surveying limu/algae/seaweed?
during the spring tides, when tides are at their lowest twice a day
when the sun, moon, and Earth are not in alignment
during King Tides- or the highest of high tides
during neap tides when there is the least tidal fluctuation
16
What can help replace bleached corals worldwide?
meroplankton
transplanted super corals
plankton
zooxanthallae
17
Limestone is
is part of beach sand
all of the other responses are correct!
composed of calcium carbonate
reef-building material
18
Reefs
make waves, break waves, and are broken down by waves into sand
are broken down by waves into sand
make waves break
break waves that would damage coastlines
19
Gracilaria salicornia
was added to the local marine food web on purpose
is the same as Gracilaria coronopifolia
increases biodiversity especially to help coral and other limu
is an invasive limu
20
What's NOT wrong with plastic? Or in other words... What's actually GOOD about plastics?
it's nontoxic & biodegrades so you can compost it to fertilize garden soil
mass produced plastics are MORE expensive than bioplastics
it's cheap, light-weight and very durable
nothing! Just a million +1 things wrong with it...a complete abomination!
21
Feral animals and ungulates degrade the water quality by
All the responses above are correct
uprooting native plants that can hold storm water
contaminating the water with pathogens that cause diseases
uprooting native plants that hold soil from being eroded
22
We study the water quality of wai 'opae anchialine pools because they are close to our aquifers.
True! They get freshwater from rivers/streams too like aquifers do!
False, anchialine pools do not have any endemic species
23
Gracilaria salicornia
is a native stream fish
grows as mats over corals
is a phytoplankton
is the same as Gracilaria coronopifolia
24
When restoring an anchialine pool (wai 'opae) to its original habitat what might volunteers/conservationists do?
add in guppies, mosquito fish, tilapia, and Tahitian prawns
check oxygen, phoshorus, nitrogen, and salinity levels
encourage people to take longer showers and water more lawns
promote climate change so sea levels rise increasing salinity in freshwater
