Select all examples of interesting natural phenomena that can we study during total solar eclipses:

It's easier to see solar prominences which stick up from the sun's surface, When the sun's surface is hidden, we can see its inner corona better, "Ham" radio signals, that usually reflect off the ionosphere, get disturbed

Look at this animation of a solar eclipse in the Americas. What does the form of the shadow tell us?

The shadow's blurry edges show places where you can see partial eclipses

What kind of eclipse is shown in this animation? How do you know?

lunar eclipse, because the moon's view of the Sun is blocked by the Earth

Why don't all states & territories in the United States see the same experience during solar eclipses?

it's position-dependent ("paths of totality" are less than 200 km wide)

This photo shows the "Baily's beads" that are visible during a total solar eclipse. Select all causes of this effect:

Light passing (diffracting) around lunar terrain features

What kind of eclipse is shown in this image? How do you know?

solar eclipse, because the sun is being blocked by the moon

How does unfiltered sunlight damage the eye?

Ultraviolet light burns cells needed for sight... forever

Explain the difference between a total solar and an annular solar eclipse by finishing this statement: The moon...

...is closer to Earth during a total eclipse, blocking more of the sun

How frequently do total solar eclipses occur?

About every 18 months, though not always over heavily populated areas

Certain radio waves can bounce off of ionized particles in the upper atmosphere. During a solar eclipse, these waves...

...can't transmit over the horizon, because the ions vanish in the shadow

Select all answers which describe very important safety for viewing solar eclipses:

Wear glasses that fit you; if your glasses slip, your eyes could get hurt, Use ISO-12312-2 standard glasses to stop intense light from blinding you, Use undamaged glasses; scratches or tears let dangerous light through

This photo shows sunlight passing through a hole during a solar eclipse. Select all answers that give it this shape:

Any hole small enough will show the solar eclipse, regardless of shape, Pinholes project an image of the light source; this is a true image

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. For sites on the path of totality, the sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk. Test your knowledge of the behind-the-scenes heliophysics and orbital dynamics with this engaging trivia game! #NASA Ages: 14+

Answers

1
Select all examples of interesting natural phenomena that can we study during total solar eclipses:
Increased volcanic activity on Mercury (and other rocky planets)
It's easier to see solar prominences which stick up from the sun's surface
When the sun's surface is hidden, we can see its inner corona better
"Ham" radio signals, that usually reflect off the ionosphere, get disturbed
2
Look at this animation of a solar eclipse in the Americas. What does the form of the shadow tell us?
Eclipses naturally avoid reflective surfaces like oceans
The shadow's shape shows it is cast by the sun blocking moonlight
The shadow's blurry edges show places where you can see partial eclipses
The spiral storm clouds over the Pacific ocean will follow the shadow
3
What kind of eclipse is shown in this animation? How do you know?
solar eclipse, because the sun is being blocked by the moon
lunar eclipse, because the moon's view of the Sun is blocked by the Earth
lunar eclipse, because the sun is being blocked by the moon
solar eclipse, because the sun is blocking the moon
4
Why don't all states & territories in the United States see the same experience during solar eclipses?
it's position-dependent ("paths of totality" are less than 200 km wide)
you can only see eclipses when the Moon is directly overhead
the same physics that creates time zones warps the light during eclipses
due to the orbit, you can't see eclipses between -30° and +30° latitude
5
This photo shows the "Baily's beads" that are visible during a total solar eclipse. Select all causes of this effect:
Light passing (diffracting) around lunar terrain features
Etheric disturbances caused by the moon's aura
Gamma rays passing through the lunar surface
Sunspots (but only at apogee or perigee)
6
What kind of eclipse is shown in this image? How do you know?
solar eclipse, because the sun is being blocked by the moon
solar eclipse, because the sun is blocking the moon
lunar eclipse, because the sun is being blocked by the moon
lunar eclipse, because the Earth is making a shadow on the moon
7
How does unfiltered sunlight damage the eye?
Invisible "sun gremlins" can feed on the delicate eye tissue
Ultraviolet light burns cells needed for sight... forever
The colorful afterimages from bright lights permanently change color vision
Solar neutrinos punch thousands of tiny holes in the optical nerve
8
Explain the difference between a total solar and an annular solar eclipse by finishing this statement: The moon...
...is closer to Earth during an annular eclipse, blocking more of the sun
...is further from Earth during a total eclipse, blocking less of the sun
...is bigger (gains mass) during some phases, so it blocks more of the sun
...is closer to Earth during a total eclipse, blocking more of the sun
9
How frequently do total solar eclipses occur?
Every leap year
Anytime a solar physicist sets up a telescope under cloudy skies
Every other month, in months with more than 30 days
About every 18 months, though not always over heavily populated areas
10
Certain radio waves can bounce off of ionized particles in the upper atmosphere. During a solar eclipse, these waves...
...can transmit further, as increased solar activity makes more ions
...freeze in place until the sun returns, causing communications delays
...can't transmit over the horizon, because the ions vanish in the shadow
...tuck their heads under their wings and stop singing
11
Select all answers which describe very important safety for viewing solar eclipses:
Wear glasses that fit you; if your glasses slip, your eyes could get hurt
Use ISO-12312-2 standard glasses to stop intense light from blinding you
Use undamaged glasses; scratches or tears let dangerous light through
Wear sun-colored clothing (yellow or white) to fit in with the crowd
12
This photo shows sunlight passing through a hole during a solar eclipse. Select all answers that give it this shape:
Any hole small enough will show the solar eclipse, regardless of shape
Dust in the atmosphere makes the illusion of a ring
The shadow will show the exact shape of the hole
Pinholes project an image of the light source; this is a true image
