9th Grade Unit 2 Vocab Review

The place and time that the events of a story take place. There can be more than one in story.

The exact meanings, or denotations, of words.

The movement of a plot toward the climax fueled by characters’ response to the conflict.

A statement (often one sentence) that summarizes the key details of a text.

Imaginative language or figures of speech, not meant to be taken literally (Ex: metaphor).

The narrator only knows the thoughts of one individual in the story.

The explanation of the importance or relevance of a supporting detail

A description or account of someone else’s life written by another person.

The events in a play, story, film, or novel that follow the climax, and lead to the resolution.

Anything that represents itself but also stands for something else on a figurative level.

The point at which the action of a story reaches its peak; point where conflict is resolved.

The distinctive way a writer uses language, characterized by elements like diction, imagery,etc

A literary device that exploits the readers’ expectations. (Used in “Gift of the Magi”)

The end of a play, story, movie, or novel in which the main conflict is finally resolved.

An account written by a person about his or her own life.

Descriptive language meant to paint pictures with words.

A reference to a well-known person, event, or place from history, music, art, or literature.

The narrator is a character in the story, and refers to themselves as “I.”

The atmosphere or general feeling in a literary work. (Ex: “Spooky” in Poe’s works)

The narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of all characters in a literary work.

People, animals, or imaginary creatures that take part in the action of a story.

A struggle or problem for a main character in a story, can be internal or external.

Main characters are introduced, the setting is described, and the conflict begins to unfold.
