Intro Final

Energy in motion is potential energy

Vectors are animals that transmit pathogens

Sterilization removes ALL pathogens

Diffusion is the movement of molecules in solution from an area of greater concentration to an area of lesser conc.

Surfactants are used to remove surface tension

Anerobic bacteria require O₂ to survive

Flagellates cause malaria

Facts or observations that have been over time. (Conservation of mass and energy) are hypotheses

Mesophile is a type of bacteria has an optimal temperature between 20 and 40C and infect humans

Liter is the unit measurement for volume

Surface tension is the force that causes the surface of a liquid to contract.

Inorganic chemistry is the study of death

Permanent hard water CAN be boiled out

Horizontal gene transfer is how bacteria become antibacterial resisistant

Protozoans are single celled free-living eukaryotes

Biosynthesis is when the viral genetic material is replicated

A solute does the dissolving

Ciliates have cilia

The study of viruses is bacateriology

Macroscopic multicellular organisms that can be barely visible to over 50 ft long are Fungi

An if then statement that describes the projected outcome of an experiment is a Scientific Law

Fomites are surfaces that carry pathogens

The ideal pH of most pathogenic bacteria is Neutral (6-8)

Embalmers use a hypertonic solution when a body is overly hydrated

CO₃ Has 4 Oxygen molecules

Bacteria reproduce by sexual reproduction

Obligate parasites need a host to survive

Electrons are negatively charged

Hydrogen bonds bond specific elements

Hair and skin are physical barriers

Infectious misfolded proteins are Prions

Purification is the act of removing impurities from water

Helminthes are macroscopic and microscopic free-living heterotrophs

Natural immunity occurs without medical intervention

Fungi reproduce by binary fission

Explanations that have been proven over time on a particular phenomenon. (Evolution, Big Bang) are scientific theories

Obligate saprophyte can ONLY feed on dead material

Dermatophytes (like athletes foot) are specialized fungi because they are NOT communicable

Law of Entropy states that energy is neither created nor destroyed but converted

Germicides kill only bacteria

Deliquescent substances remove water from the air

Inflammation is the engulfing of pathogens by non-specific immune cells

Matter is anything with mass and volume

Maturation is when the new progeny viruses are released

Ionic bonds share electrons

Eukaryotes lack membrane bound organelles

Exponential growth is the ability of bacteria to grow in numbers quickly

Disinfection removes MOST pathogens

Gram is the unit measurment for weight

Chemistry is the study of living things

Chemical properties can be observed WITH OUT changing the substance

Osmosis is diffusion through a membrane

Amebas live in water

Volume is the amt of space an object takes up

Physcial changes are ones in which a whole new substance is created

Most viruses are made up of a capsid and genetic material

Cl^- is an cation

Autotrophic bacteria breakdown dead materials

Bacteria, Archaea, Eukarya are the 3 domains of life

Protozoans transmit human to human and through arthopods

Soft science is considered natural sciences (biology, chemistry) and generally deals with numerical data.

A solvent is being dissolved

Hard water DOES NOT cause emabalmers an issue

Neutrons do not have a charge

Toxemia is the prescence of bacteria in the blood

Attachment is when the virus latches onto the host

Yeasts are macroscopic and NOT human pathogens

NaCl is both a salt and an ionic compound

Transmitted by contact between individuals is termed indirect

Funeral home inspection can occur at the local level only

An endemic describes disease or condition that is currently in higher than normal numbers in a given community

Exotoxins are spread when bacteria die

Fungi are autotrophs

Protons are postively charged

Primary mycoses of fungal entry is on the skin

A suspension is a mixture of a solute and a solvent in which the size of the solute particles is greater than 100 nm

Phagocytosis begins the process of tissue repair and blocks further damage
