I am the land in between two mountain ranges, what am I?

Ships sail across me.  I touch the continents.  What am I?

Hot. Very Hot.  So Hot, I erupted.

The liquid sits and doesn't move very far.  I am surrounded by land on all sides.  What am I?

There's hardly any water to be found here.  What am I?

Found on the Potomac River, I am in between Maryland and Virginia.

I have smoke coming out of me. What am I?
