Biology Exam I Review

high rate of per capita population growth, but poor competitive ability

Photic Zone

the resources that a population actually uses

Diversity between sites

Aphotic Zone

Biome -- cold temperatures, forests w/ mostly conifers

Limnetic Zone

What limits the number of levels in a food chain?

Animals with horns and antlers use what type of antipredator strategy?

Benthic Zone

If two of the same species are competing for the same resource

more or less stable populations adapted to exist at or near carrying capacity

Organisms that can synthesize their own food

What does -ology mean?

How are terrestrial biomes and climate change related to one another?

Name this interaction... two species interacting and the best one wins

Name this interaction... Epiphytic orchids using a tree's branches or trunk for space, the tree is unaffected

What two zones does a lake require?

type of interaction where both species experience a neutral outcome

What is the difference between natural and sexual selection?

Selection characterized by competition between the same sex

Being able to withstand a disturbance well.

Number of offspring per individual

Survivorship Curve -- rate of loss of juveniles low and most individuals lost later in life

Light penetrates further in saltwater than freshwater.

There can be a variety of interactions occurring in one small area.

What causes the east side of mountains to generally be more dry than the west?

One female mating with many males.

Biome -- moderate rainfall, distinct seasons, forests w/ mostly deciduous trees, found at mid latitudes

What is an example of keystone species?

Survivorship Curve -- fairly uniform death rate

Diversity at a particular site

Individuals mate with more than one partner.

species richness can be equal in a population, and species diversity can be different.

What is the antipredator strategy when a species flaunts its coloration as a warning

‘how’ explanation -- signal triggers response

What is an endemic species?

Organisms that eat other living things

What is a keystone species?

Calculating species diversity by the number of species and how evenly distributed they are

Example of Mullerian Mimicry

What two factors is a biome described by?

Calculating species diversity by counting the number of species

Lentic

Is DDT an insecticide or herbicide?

What is the major fact that sets a temperate grassland and a temperate forest apart?

What two questions can competition generally be defined by?

type of interaction where both species are negatively affected

What causes differences in precipitation?

Littoral Zone

Selection characterized by the choice of mates by the opposite sex

'why' explanation -- behavior increases fitness (passing of one's genes)

Define SLOSS

Define Mullerian Mimicry

Who coined the term "Ecology"?

Name this interaction... two species working together

What is K?

Biome -- average temp is high w/ some variation, annual rainfall is very low w/ low variation

What is a biome not defined by?

Calculating species diversity through a combination of species richness and species diversity

Lotic

Each individual mates exclusively with one partner.

Being able to "bounce back" after a disturbance.

form of evolution where the best or strongest survive

What two factors is the Whittaker diagram based on?

Biome -- dry/hot climate with sparse vegetation that grows low to the dry/hard ground

type of interaction where one species has a positive outcome and the other has a neutral outcome

Name this interaction... pathogen infecting a host

Name this interaction... two species coexisting in one space

What does oikos- mean?

Biome -- moderate temps, vegetation is low w/ many grazers, seasons are present

Linear depiction of energy flow

What are aquatic systems/zones defined by?

the resources that a population is capable of using

What food should we stop eating? (has a bigger impact than other foods)

What is the greatest cause of biodiversity loss and species extinction?

type of interaction where both species experience a positive outcome

Biome -- great amount of water is present but not readily available, very cold, frozen year-round, high latitudes

The long-term, average conditions of an area

What causes differences in temp?

Example of Batesian Mimicry

Movement of energy through the ecosystem

Name this interaction... one taller plant shading out another plant

What are areas with a lot of endemics called?

What gender of the majority of species does the choosing in mate selection?

What does community ecology focus on?

Define Batesian Mimicry

form of evolution that promotes traits to increase an organism's mating success

What type of antipredator strategy does the puffer fish use?

If two different species are competing for the same resource

Biome -- high annual precipitation and high average temp w/ low variation in temp over the year, thick & tall vegetation

Survivorship Curve -- rate of loss for juveniles high and then loss low for survivors

type of interaction where one has a negative outcome and the other has a neutral outcome

The short-term, current conditions of an area

Diversity at a particular site and between sites

Where does the majority of primary productivity come from on Earth?

Categories of predation can be classified according to what?

What is the anti-predator strategy when a species uses their color as camouflage?

Organisms that feed on dead organisms or their waste products

One male mating with many females.
