A comparison that uses "like", "as", or "than".

Appeals to logic. May use data, facts, reason, statistics, etc.

The feeling of the text. May shift throughout. Can be positive, negative, gloomy, joyful, etc.

The rhetorical devices used to persuade the audience (Ethos, Logos, Pathos)

Appeals to emotion. Evokes anger, patriotism, fear, sympathy, empathy, etc.

What made the speaker create this text for the audience (AKA "The Spark")

The reason why a text was created. Could be to inform, persuade, entertain, etc.

Includes the setting, time period, and events that were happening when the text was created.

All the little moves an author uses to make their writing more interesting. (Allusions, similes, metaphors)

A direct comparison. Says that something "is" something else.

The "author" of the text.

Appeals to credibility. Author may establish their expertise, likability, celebrity, ethics, etc.

An indirect reference. Could be biblical, mythological, historical, pop cultural, literary...

Who the text is created for. The speaker may change their approach depending on who this is.
