Earth Science Ch 3

a salt crystal is what shape

minenerals called ores are mined because they contain beautiful substances

most minerals are composed of ______ comined with other elements

Is coal a mineral?

halite

why is digging beneath earth's surface necessary for mining ores

properties that make titanium useful for tennis rackets and wheelchairs

products in which titanium is used

pyrite

quartz

minerals are inorganic, have a unique chemical composition, are formed by natural processes, and are crystalline solids

minerals that are different in other properties may be alike in color

Amethyst is considered a gemstone because it has an attractive color due to traces of iron

in the process of mining for bauxite ore, what is the 1st step

crystals may be

all of the following are minerals except

one important use for titanium is

crystals that grow in spacious areas

some crystals are formed from minerals dissolved in liquids

why are ilmenite & rutile ores

why is sugar not a mineral

A mineral is a crystalline

minerals mined for titanium

minerals that contain silicon & oxygen (the 2 most common elements in the earth's crust)

2 types of this are called glassy and metallic

which phrase refers to the repeating patterns in which atoms are arranged in a crystal

since titanium is nontoxic, lightweight, and durable it makes good material for hip/knee replacements

tests for hardness and streak help identify minerals

magma

a mineral is classified as an ore as long as

one of the softest minerals is

titanium ores can occur as

qualities of mineral that classify it as an ore

sphalerite

diamond

qualities of a stone that make it a gemstone

many minerals form as magma beneath earth's surface cooled

crystals grown in small spaces, have a regular shape

What partly determines the type of mineral formed by cooling magma

a crystal is always

some minerals form when magma cools

how would a collector of minerals determine the hardness of an unknown mineral specimen

some minerals form when

tendency of a mineral to break along a smooth, flat surface

hematite

how do crystals of a mineral form

when liquid evaporates, mineral molecules may come together to form crystals
