Educational Psychology Final Exam review part 1

extrinsic usefulness for meeting short-term andlong-term goals

Stores information in the form of schemas and images, encoded from working memory

When an old memory makes it more difficult or impossible to remember a new memory

which of the following is NOT an influence of attributions on learners?

The ability to produce original works or solutions to problems thatare productive and task-appropriate

All procedural knowledge initially depends on declarativeknowledge

the process by which humans use mental shortcuts to arrive at decisions. Work in some situations but not others.

activating prior knowledge so new knowledge can be connected to it

What is the first step to solving a problem?

what is the 3rd step in solving a problem?

Previous learning facilitates learning on a new task

Problem-solving strategies that provide a specific set ofsteps, which, if followed, will result in a solution

working memory depends on attention and perception

the belief that your intelligence, talents, and other abilities are set in stone

a representation of memory that describes the organization of declarative facts and knowledge in the mind

__________ is used for information storage and manipulation

Procedural knowledge overlearned to the point ofautomaticity is more likely to transfer

The more thorough and meaningful information isencoded, the greater the likelihood that it will transfer to newcontexts

long term memory is permanent, and has unlimited capacity

Previous learning hinders learning on new tasks

the recollection of specific personal events in one's life

Knowledge and skills are more likely to transfer when they are learned and applied to real-world contexts

what is the 2nd step to solving a problem?

The more similarity that exists between contexts, the LESSER the likelihood of transfer

working memory has an unlimited capacity

Conscious Attention

the sensory register holds virtually unlimited capacity

an end goal is identified and then fulfilled via the generation of subgoals that help overcome obstacles encountered

people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work

what occurs in working memory?

Process of anchoring & adjusting performance, both mental and physical in nature, in response to corrective feedback

Intrinsically motivated to achieve mastery on personally meaningful goals

the ability to remember without being given specific choices

which of the following is NOT a dimension of an attribute?

concepts, principles, and theories. Ismore likely to transfer than are isolated facts

Independence and an individual’s ability to alter the environment when necessary

Highly motivated to avoid failure and do not have high expectations for success

The ability to perform mental operations with little awareness orconscious effort

The feeling of being connected to others in one’s social environment and feeling worthy of love and respect

clustering related items of content into categories that illustrate relationships

Which of the following is NOT a critical thinking question?

how long does short term memory last?

the consideration of what an individual must give up toengage in a task

The process of mentally combining separate items into larger moremeaningful units

The ability to apply information in a context similar to the one in which it was originally learned

Fairly easy or familiar tasks are considered touse

satisfying interest, curiosity, or enjoyment

an individual's belief that abilities are fixed traits

Everyone’s attention is UNLIMITED, both in capacity andduration

Integration of words and visual displays to capitalize onindependent processing capabilities

all the sensory informationexperienced before that information is processed

repeating items over and over again without altering the information

believe in the value of effort, have mastery-oriented goals, and have been associated with higher academic performance

the intrinsic importance of being good at atask for one’s own identity

All learning begins with attention, so attracting andmaintaining attention is essential

Being able to choose the correct answer from a list of choices

whether we perceive the cause as being stable orunstable over time.

Multitasking tends to lead to poorer learning and performance

A problem that has only one correct solution and a certain method for finding it

When new information interferes with your ability to remember previously learned information

knowledge of how to perform the task isinvolved in actually solving the problem

visual sensory memory lasts how long?

Acts as a screen, resulting in us focusing on somestimuli but ignoring others

the act of getting information into our memory system through automatic or effortful processing

The ability to function effectively in the environment.

The ability and inclination to make and assess conclusions based on evidence

The ability to function effectively in the environment.

Which of the following is NOT an effective strategy?

the neural process that strengthens memories over time and can take days, weeks, and months to complete is _________

The ability to apply knowledge or skills learned in one context, in a variety of different contexts

expanding on knowledge by adding new information to it or finding new links in existing information

Knowledge of facts, concepts, rules, and procedures

Accept failure and give up the struggle to demonstrate ability and maintain self worth

the ability to focus on one stimulusand ignore others

our recognition and interpretation of sensory information

a technique for visualizing the relationships between different concepts

where we place the cause of the outcome

whether we can control the cause or not

the encoding process follows which order?

a diagram where the terms of a proposition and relations between them are represented as nodes linked to form a network

All individuals are competent and capable of being successful, provided they have opportunities of self-efficacy

the ability to focus on multiple stimuli

what is the last step to solving a problem?

sensory register holds information in an ORGANIZED form

Motivated by a sense of pride stemming from success and the temporary relief of not failing

Problem that has more than 1 acceptable solution, an ambiguous goal, and no general agreed-upon strategy for a solution

forming mental pictures of information

Auditory memory (echoic): memories based on informationpresented orally, lasts how long?

An expectation that we are capable of performing a task or succeeding in an activity, influences motivation

The ability to function effectively in the environment.

drawing utilizing which can go from observing an architectural model to a design idea inspired by the same model

how long does working memory last?

knowledge about our cognitive processes. Intentional use of cognitive processes to improve learning and memory.

_________ is used for information storage only

Reasons for undertaking a task

Students’ Expectations for success

Cognitive operations that exceed normal activities required to carry out a task

Memories of touch (tactile memory), last how long?

Previous learning has no effect on the performance of a new task

Self worth is determined by our performance and abilities in activities that we deem valuable
