Algebra 1 Chapter 1 Vocabulary

the multiplicative inverse of a number (flip it)

an expression in the form xⁿ read x to the nth

the point where two axes intersect at one point

the grid formed by the intersection of two number lines, the horizontal and vertical axes

a replacement value for the variable in an open sentence

relationship where each element of the domain is paired with exactly one element of the domain

the numerical factor of a term

terms that contain the same variable, with corresponding variables having the same exponent

illustrates how each element of the domain is paired with each element in the range

variable in a relation with a value that depends on the other variable (the output or y-value)

symbols used to represent unspecified numbers or values

a mathematical sentence that contains an equals sign

when each half of the graph on either side of the line matches exactly

determines if a relation is a function(any vertical line touches only one point on the graph)

an expression consisting of one or more numbers and variables along with one or more operations

in and experssion xⁿ, x is the ________

in an expression xⁿ , the number of times the factor x is used

a number, a variable, or the product or quotient of a number or variable

lowest point in a particular portion of a graph

describes how the values of a function behave at each end of the graph.

when an expression is replaced by an equivalent expression having no like terms or parenthesis

a set of ordered pairs

points where the graph intersects the axis

set of numbers or coordinates used to locate any point on a coordinate plane

set of numbers from which a substitute for the variables may be chosen

the set of the first numbers of the ordered pairs in a relation (the x value or the input)

the set of second numbers in an ordered pair (y-values or output)

variable in a relation with a value that is subject to choice (the input or x-value)

highest point in a particular portion of a graph

set of rules that tell you in which order to evaluate expressions:
