6th Grade Literary Elements

The act of giving human like qualities to non-human objects.

The major idea/topic surrounding a piece of literature.

To present an indication or a suggestion of beforehand.

The patterned, recurring alternations of contrasting elements of sound or speech.

A description of qualities regarding a character within literature; static or dynamic character

The act or process or an instance of repeating or being repeated.

The emotional quality attributed to the READER within a piece of literature. 

The sequence of events in a story: Exposition,Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action,Resolution

The repetition of the same sounds or of the same kinds of sounds at the beginning of words.

An extreme exaggeration used for emphasis. eg: He was as fast as speeding locomotive.

A problem the character has during a story; Man vs. Man, Man vs. Self, or Man vs Nature

The practice of representing things, objects, events, or relationships by means of symbols.

When an earlier event is inserted into the normal chronological order of a narrative.

The use of words that imitate the sounds associated with the objects or actions they refer to. 

A word or phrase that ordinarily states that one thing is another. e.g Love is a journey.

THE MEssage.--> A lesson the author teaches the reader through events in the story.

The use of words to express something different from & often opposite to their literal meaning.

The distinctive style of expression of an author or of a character in a piece of literature.

The time AND place in which a piece of literature occurs.

The side of the story you hear is influenced by the position and values of the narrator.

Who is telling the story?  Author writes the story using 1st Person, 2nd Person, or 3rd Person.

Descriptions by the author using any of the five (5) senses; painting a picture for the reader.

The emotional quality portrayed by the AUTHOR within a piece of literature. 

Two unlike things are compared to one another using the words "like" or "as".
