In a story about a girl afraid of heights, the reader is taken back to a scene where the girl fell off a slide as a baby

A discrepancy between what is said and what is really meant (sarcasm)

The beginning of a story where the main characters, setting, and main conflict are introduced.

Hear the mellow wedding bells.

The most exciting part of the story where the conflict or problem is at its worst. Will the protagonist win or lose?

He’s running at lightning speed.

A meaning that is implied by a word. (An idea or feeling a word invokes)

The pattern of end rhyme in a poem. Creates rhythm and sound.

Don't go in the living room. The Civil War just broke out over the Clue game.

When the audience knows more about a character’s situation than the character does (used in plays or movies)

The series of events that build suspense in a story.

The salty breeze tickled my arms as it brushed against my damp skin and caused my arm hairs to stand at attention.

This narrator is talking to the reader or to another character in the story. Not common in literature. Uses you.

A brief, indirect reference to an event, person, place or artistic work that most people would recognize.

One character in the story is the narrator and all events are told through the eyes of this character. Uses I/me
