(The football) landed in the hands of the still stunned Hands Down.

The phantom Samaritan hauled him out of there like a sack of flour.

The town was buzzing.  The schools were buzzing.  Buzzing about the new kid.

The soles of his sneakers were flopping open like dog tongues...

McNab was a giant.

To her, the torn page was the broken wing of a bird, a pet out in the rain.

He juked and jived and danced and darted...

Because people just didn't say that to strangers, out of the blue.

He had made baseball history and he wanted to stretch it out as long as he could...

He and Amanda were like a rock in a stream; the school-goers just flowed around them.

Maniac didn't answer Mars Bar.  Flies stopped buzzing.

Cobble's Knot was about as friendly as a nest of yellowjackets.

Finsterwald's backyard was a graveyard of tennis balls and baseballs and footballs and frisbees

Kids stayed away from Finsterwald's the way old people stay away from Saturday afternoon movies

The East End lady in her prime was matching him eyeball for eyeball.

The ball zoomed and whizzed past their noses.
