Fiction Analysis Vocabulary

A psychological conflict within a character.

The perspective from which the story is told.  

Eases the suspense & shows how the main character resolves the conflict.

The basic sequence of events in a story.  

The problem between persons or forces that brings about action central to the plot of a story.

The sustained interest created by the buildup of events & delayed resolution of the conflict.

Presents complications that intensify the conflict and build suspense.

The creation of characters through descriptions, actions, and dialogue.  

The time and place in which events in a short story, novel, play, or narrative poem take place.

The central or universal idea of the piece of fiction or the main idea of a nonfiction essay.

A struggle that is man versus man, man versus nature, or man versus society

Introduces setting, characters, and conflict.

The voice that tells the story.

Traits that are directly stated by the author.

The turning point, or moment of greatest suspense.

The point in a literary work at which the story’s problem is worked out.
