AP Psych Biology

Mobilizes our body to respond to stress

Space between the terminal buttons of one neuron and the dendrites of the next neuron

nerve bundle that connects the two brain hemispheres

Branched end of the axon that contains neurotransmitters

Neurons that take information from the brain to the rest of the body

Vertical strip of the cerebral cortex that receives incoming touch sensations from the body

controls what we think of as thought and reason

Chemicals released from the terminal buttons that inhibit the next neuron from firing

Associated with motor movement and alertness/lack-Parkinson's disease/ too much-schizophrenia

associated with mood control and memory/ lask associated with clinical depression

bottom rear of the brain/ coordinates some habitual muscle movement

Neurons that take information from sense to the brain

Vertical strip back of frontal lobe/ sends signals to muscles controlling voluntary movement

wrinkled surface of the brain

Parts of the brain can adapt themselves to perform other functions if needed

Located in the frontal lobe/responsible for producing speech

controls our blood pressure, heart rate and breathing

Consists of the brain and the spinal cord

Procedure that detects brain waves

Electric charge that spreads down the length of a neuron after the threshold is achieved

Uses magnetic fields to measure the density and location of brain material

Netlike collection of cells throughout the midbrain that controls general body arousal

Neural Cell

areas of the cerebral cortex that is not involved in sensory information and movement

Measures how much of a certain chemical parts of the brain are using

areas of the cerebral cortex: frontal, parietal, temporal, and occtipital

The neuron either fires completely or not at all

these injuries to specific brain areas allow psychologists to study functions of the brain

System of glands that secrete hormones- chemicals that travel through the bloodstream

areas on a dendrite designed to receive a specific neurotransmitter

Controls automatic functions/ heart, lungs, internal organs, glands and so on

Level of neurotransmitters required to fire a neuron

Controls important functions to be able to focus

located at the top front part of the brain behind the eyes

specialization of function in each brain hemisphere

Associated with motor movement/ lack is associated with Alzheimer's disease

Connects the hindbrain with the midbrain and forebrain/ Controls facial expressions and sleep

Associated with pain control/ Involved with drug addictions

Sophisticated x-ray to show the structure of the brain

small area of the brain within the limbic system, controls fear responses

the cerebral cortex are divided into these two parts

interprets messages from our eyes in our visual cortex

Chemicals released from the Terminal buttons of a neuron that excite the next neuron to fire

Structures in the top part of the spinal cord/controls basic biological functions

Controls Voluntary muscle movements

name for the group of structures: thalamus, hypothalamus, amygdala, and hippocampus

in Left temporal lobe/ responsible for written and spoken speech

Processes sound sensed by ears

removal or destruction of art of the brain

Responsible for slowing down the body after a stress response

Wirelike Structure ending in the terminal buttons that extends from the cell body

Rootlike parts of the cell that stretch out from the cell body

Contains the nucleus and other parts of the cell needed to sustain its life

a bundle of Nerves that run through the center of the spine

Electricity travels within the cell and the chemicals travel between the cells in the synapse

vital to our memory system

controls several metabolic functions

gets sensory messages and controls the motor function of the right side of the body

Located behind the frontal lobe on the top of the brain/ contains sensory cortex

Combines elements of the MRI and PET scans

sends sensory signals coming up the spinal cord and sending them to the appropriate places

gets sensory messages and controls the motor function of the left half of the body

Chemicals contained in terminal buttons that enable neurons to communicate

All the nerves in the body other than the brain and Spinal Cord

Fatty covering around the axon of some neurons that speeds neural impulses
