Week 4: The GBR Marine Park: Gold-standard conservation planning

What is the current status of the GBR?

In the Keppel Islands, what proportion of coral trout juveniles on fished reefs were produced by adults inside reserves

How big is the Great Barrier Reef?

The GBR Marine Park was re-zoned in 2004, and the coverage of no-take marine reserves was increased from 5 to 13%?

What is the estimated number of coral species that inhabit the Great Barrier Reef?

Marine reserves are the most effective zones for conserving apex predators (e.g. large sharks) in the GBR Marine Park

The Great Barrier Reef contributes approx. $5,000,000 to the national economy each year?

How effective are no-take reserves on the Great Barrier Reef for primary target species?

The same number of reef and non-reef bioregions were used as habitat surrogates in the GBR Marine Park rezoning process?

What is the primary mechanism through which marine reserves enhance the resilience of protected coral reefs?

After the coral bleaching events of 2016 & 2017, fewer corals died in offshore than inshore waters of the northern GBR?

How has the IUCN classified the status of the GBR in their most recent (2020) assessment of World Heritage Areas?

What proportion of corals in the southern region of the GBR died in the mass coral bleaching events of 2016 and 2017?

What is the estimated value of ecosystem services derived from coral reefs?
