Ch. 14,16 Vocabulary Review

Taxonomic group of one or more kingdoms

Random effect that can occur when a small pop. settles in an area separated from the rest of the pop. and interbreeds

Random change in allelic frequencies in a population

Branch of biology that identifies, names, and classifies species based on their natural relationships

Occurs when a population is divided by a geographic barrier evolves into two or more populations unable to interbreed

Taxonomic group of closely related species with a common ancestor

Morphological adaptations that allows organisms to blend into their surroundings

Anatomically similar structure inherited from a common ancestor

Reduced form of a functional structure that indicates shared ancestry

Darwin's term for the selective breeding of organisms with certain traits in order to produce offspring with those trait

Unicellular, multicellular, or colonial eukaryote whose cell walls may contain cellulose

Process in which large pop. declines in number, then rebounds

Morphological adaptation in which one species evolves to resemble another species for protection or other advantages

Model that uses comparisons of DNA sequences top estimate phylogeny and rate of evolutionary change

Structure that has the same function but different construction and was not inherited from a common ancestor

Grouping of organisms or objects based on a set of criteria that helps organize, communicate, and retain info

Theory of evolution developed by Darwin based on 4 ideas: Reproduction, Variations, Inheritance, and Advantages

Linnaeus's system of naming organisms, which gives a scientific two-word Latin name to each species

Occurs when a species evolves into a new species in an area w/o a geographical barrier

Unicellular/multicellular eukaryote that is stationary, absorbs nutrients from environment, and has cell walls w/ chitin

Inherited morphological/biochemical feature that varies among species and can be used to determine patterns of descent

Hereditary changes in groups of living organisms over time

Measure of a trait's relative contribution to the following generation

Diagram with branches that represents the hypothesized phylogeny or evolution of a species or group

Evolutionary history of species
